Adarsh Gram Yojana fails to make any difference in Dheena’s condition

Jalandhar – Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his first address to the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort had announced his vision for what the individual Members of Parliament (MPs) could aspire to achieve in the next five years, selecting and nourishing three ‘Adarsh’ (model) villages in their respective constituencies. “If we have to build a nation, we should start from the village,” he said. The idea behind this novel scheme seemed prudent. But no such programme on behalf of the MPs from whom people expect a great deal from something as basic as cover ing potholes to making a village clean has been done.

On 11 October, 2014 Modi launched Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojna (SAGY) with much fanfare, yet the villages became victims of limbo. Daily Post reached the village Dheena which is adopted by notable Member of Parliament (Upper House) Naresh Gujral of Shiromani Akali Dal. It was learnt that during past three-and-a-half year Gujral had disbursed around Rs 1.25 crore to the village. Blemish is that most of the amount was disbursed for inappropriate works as more than Rs 40 lakh were given to Firozepur railways authority to install sewerage beneath railway lining, which has resolved the issues of only 30 per cent households in the village with pipelining expenditure of Rs 22 lakh.

It is learnt that Gujral had given Rs 5 lakh to install solar-oriented streetlights, but due to a small amount, local panchayat could only purchase 55 streetlights which were installed with more than 500 metres of distance, making them of no use. The model village still possesses brick made streets and garbage dumps overflow making garbage float on roads. The village does not have any medical facilities or dispensary and even governmental education in the PM’s model village is till middle class only. It is worth mentioning that as the Municipal Corporation is planning to expand its limits the village will be roped in red line of the MC.
